The Pirl team strives to create a comfortable and functional ecosystem. One of the links to this ecosystem is PirlChat messenger. PirlChat is a peer to peer messaging system that interacts with the Pirl blockchain. At the time of the review (May 2019) PirlChat is available in beta versions for Android and IOS, you can sign up for beta testing here, you must also be a member of the PIRL Discord chat.

We tested the beta versions of PirlChat on multiple Android devices; versions 4.3, 5.1.1, and 8.1. Testing PirlChat with Android 4.3 turned out to be extremely conditional since the smartphone could not find the program in Google Play. This was apparently a very old version of Android. Whether or not the future will support such devices is still not clear.

It was discovered that PrilChat was installing the program on a smartphone with Android version 5.1.1, but it would not work beyond registration, and the chat didn’t want to connect directly. Everything worked fine with Android 8.1, and we managed to install the program without problems, launch it, register a new account, and restore the one that was created with Android 5.1.1.

PirlChat will ask you to turn on screen lock after installing and setting a password on your smartphone. Of course, not everyone will like it, but we must remember that this is just a beta version. Next, you need to create an account, essentially a new address on the Pirl network. After that, the program will offer to save 24 words, with these words it will be possible to restore the account.

Currently available light and dark themes.

You will need to transfer some Pirl to your PirlChat address to use the app to its fullest extent. For example, features such as attaching a nickname to the address or sending a message will require a micro-transaction from your account. We transferred 1 Pirl and after a moment the program itself detected the transaction and updated the balance. The invoice received 0.99670771 PIRL, because the network charged 0.00329229 Pirl in gas.

The screenshot shows a change in the balance after certain actions.

On a smartphone with Android 8.1 we executed an account recovery procedure, which was registered on a previous smartphone with Android 5.1.1. The restoration was done using those secret words saved at the beginning of registration. After the recovery procedure, there were messages that were sent as a test on the smartphone with Android 5.1.1.

You will need to know the user’s address to start chatting with someone. If the address is entered incorrectly, the program will report an error. Chat messages come almost instantly.

Available settings at this stage:

  • light and dark themes;
  • possibility to choose connection to an American or European server;
  • loading avatars, deleting data;
  • enable/disable notifications.

To sum up, we can say that PirlChat left a good impression, despite the fact that this is a beta version. We are waiting for a bug revision, new features, and definitely waiting for the release.

Many thanks to Bob Routledge (aka Numnah, the official Pirl team) for helping with this article.
